Protected trade

Exotic timber and skins, from the CITES record.

Every international shipment of a CITES-listed species is recorded. Filtered to timber and skins since 2010, that is 8.0 million shipments — enough to say plainly which countries the world's protected wood and reptile leather come from.

Exporter is not origin. The CITES export field counts re-exports, so Switzerland leads on American alligator: tanning and finishing are European, the animals are not. Both columns are shown, and the gap between them is usually the point.
